The giraffe is the tallest terrestrial mammal in the world, standing about 5m tall - as high as a single-story house. The giraffe’s coat has dark patches, which can be orange, chestnut, brown, or nearly black, on a white or cream coloured base. The colour and shape of these patches is the easiest way to distinguish giraffes from different regions and each giraffe has its own unique pattern. Giraffes develop long lasting social groups and these groups regularly associate with other groups in larger communities.

Sadly, giraffe numbers plummeted by a staggering 40% in the last three decades, and less than 100,000 remain today. Habitat loss through expanding agriculture, human-wildlife conflict, civil unrest, and poaching for their meat, pelts, and tails, are among the reasons for the decline.

We need your support to create a future for people and nature

Make a symbolic adoption of a giraffe today to show your love and support for our wildlife and wild spaces.

What is WWF doing?

WWF has been involved in species conservation and addressing threats to wildlife since the 1960s. More recently we work closely with rural communities who live near to major wildlife areas. Our influence in wildlife conservation policies assists in balancing environmental goals against social and economic needs. By empowering people, we enable the community to benefit from – and value – wildlife.

In all we do, we take a holistic approach towards ensuring that wildlife is valued by people and able to thrive within functioning well-managed landscapes.

How does the symbolic adoption work?

First of all: thank you. You’re choosing something different. This is a special gift because it will help protect the beautiful and sometimes fragile environments that surrounds us – for both people and nature.

This is a perfect gift for animal lovers, environmentalists or simply people with a big heart.

Did you know?

The giraffe’s neck is the longest of any animal, but it still has only 7 neck bones, as in other mammals.

Baby giraffes are born 6 feet tall (1.8m) - taller than the average person.

A newborn giraffe is able to walk within an hour after birth.

A giraffe weighs over 1000 kg and has a life span of between 20 and 30 years.
