The African leopard is equipped with impeccable stealth and unmatched agility, it is the epitome of a nocturnal hunter. The leopard has the largest distribution of all wild cats and can even adapt to living close to humans. Sadly, the African leopard faces a number of threats, such as habitat loss, reduced availability of prey and human-wildlife conflict, and the illegal wildlife trade resulting in an uncertain future for this charismatic and mesmerising creature.
We need to safeguard this species and ensure that wildlife is valued by people and able to thrive within functioning within well-managed landscapes. We do this by building supportive partnerships between communities, NGOs, and government institutions. These partnerships improve the collective management of protected areas and equitable access to natural resources and develop communities that are safe, healthy and have socio-economic opportunities.
We need your support to create a future for people and nature
Make a symbolic adoption of a leopard today to show your love and support for our wildlife and wild spaces in South Africa.
What is WWF doing?
WWF has been involved in species conservation and addressing threats to wildlife since the 1960s. More recently we work closely with rural communities that live near to major wildlife areas. Our influence in wildlife conservation policies assists in balancing environmental goals against social and economic needs. By empowering people, we enable communities to benefit from – and value – wildlife.
This is part of our holistic approach towards ensuring that wildlife is valued by people and able to thrive within functioning well-managed landscapes.

Did you know?
Leopards can weigh between 17 to 65kgs and they have a lifespan of between 10 to 12 years.
The patterns on a leopard's coat provide camouflage, making them nearly invisible in their natural habitat.
They have an incredibly strong bite, which allows them to carry prey that is larger than themselves up into trees.
They often pull their prey into trees to keep it safe from hyenas and lions.
